Spare Change

What I wanted
Was to write
The lines
That would say
How I had changed
Since I walked
Out of the rain
Instead I threw
Three quarters
Into a callused palm
And continued on my way

  1. Dropping those quarters, in one hand, was worth more to than them,
    or we would do it!

Even i drop those coins and i’ve been on both sides…

  2. This is such a wonderful poem. I truly admire your style. It reminds me of how we often don’t know what to say or do when we encounter a homeless person panhandling. I have always been against giving them money, buying in to the old believe that they’ll probably just spend it on alcohol. One year for lent, while living in Philadelphia, rather than give up something, I took up feeding the homeless. Once a week I would buy a hamburger, chips and a can of soda and give it to someone begging on the street.
